The so-called "Free braces" have been available in Austria since July 2015. Whether a person is eligible depends on the severity of their dental and jaw misalignment. If a person is classified as severity level 4 or 5 according to the IOTN system (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need), their health insurance will cover the cost of treatment with a contracted orthodontist.

This involves two services covered under the health insurance contract for orthodontics:

Interceptive treatment:

• For severe misalignments from age six onward.

• This is usually done using removable or fixed braces.

• These are orthodontic treatments for young children that are used to correct specific dental misalignments before the age of 10.

The primary orthodontic treatment using fixed braces:

• For children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 with severe misalignments.

• This includes all necessary services related to treatment with metal brackets, bands, archwires, and elastics.

If the severity of the dental and/or jaw misalignment is below IOTN 4, patients will be responsible for copayments of one-third or more of the total cost.

Does the so called free braces program also apply to adults?

Unfortunately not; this applies only to insured individuals between the ages of 6 and 18 with an IOTN level of 4 or 5. However, adult patients with an IOTN level of 4 or 5 may still submit their bills to the ÖGK. In such cases, the ÖGK provides a subsidy of up to EUR 821.80 (Tariff 2026) per treatment year, provided that the bill for that year has been paid in full.

When are you eligible for free braces in Salzburg?

Starting at IOTN Level 4, children and adolescents under the age of 18 are eligible for free braces in Salzburg.

What is the IOTN evaluation?

An IOTN evaluation is a medical assessment to determine whether braces are necessary.

What does “medically necessary” mean?

The degree of dental misalignment is determined using an international index (IOTN—Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs). This index classifies misalignment into severity levels IOTN 1 through 5. In cases of misalignment classified as severity level 4 or 5, there is a medical necessity for correction, and thus a right to receive braces at no cost.

How long does the treatment take?

Typically 1.5 to 3 years—depending on the severity of the misalignment.
